The Indians are taking all of my favorite players
So now that I’m back in town, I figured I’d give you a quick update.
The Cubs, who haven’t done shit since the Peavy trade collapsed have traded Mark DeRosa to the Cleveland Indians for three prospects. They have also signed Aaron Miles to a two year contract. Miles batted .317 with 4 dingers and 31 RBIs in 134 games last year with the Cards. It is also rumoured that Jason Marquis is on his way to Colorado for RHP Luis Viscaino. Apparently this is all in order to get free agent Milton Bradley.
This blows goats because DeRosa was a baller. I know he just had a career year and that he probably won’t have another year like that again and that he is at his highest value right now, but MILTON BRADLEY? Really? If this was done in order to get Peavy, then fine, I’m OK with that but to make this trade in order to get Milton Bradley? Fuck you Jim Hendry, Fuck you. This is the guy who tore his ACL arguing with an umpire.
I couldn’t find the video of Bradley actually fighting with the ref but here’s two douches discussing it:
Let me just first say that signing Milton Bradley would be no slouch of a move. The Cubs need a power-hitting lefty (Bradley is a switcher) who can play right field on a daily basis. In comparison to the other free agents available (basically Adam “I can hit a baseball a half mile” Dunn and Bobby Abreu), Bradley is the best fit for the Cubs because he can actually play decent defense. The guy might be bat shit crazy, but he can hit the ball. Look at his All-Star numbers from last season with Texas…
.321 BA, 22 HR, 77 RBI, .436 OBP, .536 SLG
While he won’t be able to crush the ball like Big Donkey, the guy will probably hit about 20 homers and still have an above .300 batting average. Playing in a dangerous Cubs lineup with Ramirez, Soto and Soriano should help give him some protection too. I expect he will put up similar numbers.
Despite all this optimism, if these transactions fail to bring Peavy to the team, I’ll see it as quite a large failure on the part of GM Jim Hendry. So I agree with Kevin. Dropping DeRosa (plus adding Miles) and signing Bradley is a push in my books. Making some space for Peavy would be an epic victory though.
