Bears Wide Receivers – Should Management Go AFter Plax/ B. Marsh?

Devin Hester must protect his million dollar brain at all times. If this whole wide receiver thing doesn't work out for him then he can always fall back on his education...
Your favorite part of sports blogging is back… Personnel Speculation! Plaxico Burriss’ lawyer said on Monday that there is no reason to believe that Plax will not be available to play in the 2009-2010 season. Alternately, the Broncos have agreed to move troubled receiver Brandon Marshall. I put it to you (us), should the Bears consider targeting either player?
Brian: Word from Bears camp is that Devin Hester & Earl Bennet are having monster pre-season workouts (I’d reference, but c’mon, would I lie to you?). Like, they are both catching everything in sight, running tight patterns, and generally being Professional-level wideouts; weird, right? That said, I still think that the Bears should go after Plaxico Burress. Putting aside the Bears stance on “troubled players”, I think it’d be a great addition to a receiving corps that had hardly anything to offer last season. Plax is a PTPer that changes games. On top of that, he adds a (very serious) threat opposite Greg Olson on the goal line. Oh, and because he totally “FML‘d” himself – any contract he signs will be heavily incentive-laden & thus, a win-win for the team that signs him.
But Brian, he’s a bad guy, he brings guns to clubs & goes to clubs & has guns and wah wah wah. I. Don’t. Care. This is 2009, the ethics of professional athletes are kaput & I want to win. Now.
Kevin:After Cedric Benson and Tank Johnson, I should probably be more skeptical and think that signing one of these guys is a huge mistake, but I don’t. We should definitely get one of these guys. Now Plax is the better wide out and is one of the best in the league, but Marshall and Cutler were huge together in Denver and they already have a chemistry. However, Marshall has all sorts of problems with domestic violence and that’s just not cool. Plax on the other hand is just a fucking moron. I mean come on, bring a gun to a club and shooting yourself in the leg? I swear I saw that in a movie once. The Bears wide out core is terrible. Even if Devin Hester and Earl Bennet are having great OTA’s, it’s still just practice and neither of those guys are ever going to be as good as Marshall or Plax. This offense is one big time wide out away from being a complete and total power house. Picking up either one of these guys not only makes the team a serious contender but it lightens the load on Jay Cutler. Having a PTP wide out on your team makes a QBs job so much easier because when you get into a crunch and you need a first down, you can simply throw it up in the air and you can rely on that guy to go up and get it. That’s what Plax can do, that’s what Marshall can do. With one of these guys on the team, you have great complimentary receivers in Hester (speed) and Davis (possession). Not to mention a fantastic TE pair and a running back who can catch passes out of the back field. Cutler will have all the pieces he needs to make this offense into one of the best in the league. That sounds weird. The Bears having a great offense. I just got the chills.
I was going to write up my own response, but screw it.
Neither of these guys are worth it unless the Bears can get them effortlessly and cheaply (which won’t happen).
Who knows if Burress or Marshall are even going to be able to play due to outstanding legal situations. It’s hard for them to catch passes when they aren’t on the field.
Not to mention the Bears would have to trade for B-Marsh. We really don’t have anything left to give up for him, especially in terms of draft picks.
The only legit shot the Bears had at upgrading at WR was when they attempted to trade for Bolden on draft day and couldn’t get it done.
